Press Release 12122006
Voices For Freedom deplores India's Dismal Human Rights Conditions
12th December, 2006
On the occasion of the World Human Rights Day Voices For Freedom wrote to Ms. Louise Arbour the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to intervene and caution India on its deplorable Human Rights conditions. India claims it has made tremendous progress in the field of Human Rights in the recent past but despite these claims the ground reality has not changed much for the common person. People continue to suffer at the hands of police. Torture is rampant and custodial deaths are still commonplace occurrences. Minorities such as Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and Dalits continue to suffer inequalities. Tribals in Central and North East India suffer at the hands of land mafias and bureaucracy bent upon taking their natural habitats away from them. Violations such as these occur on a daily basis. The letter and the report are attached along with this release.
