The Book
The book to be launched is a groundbreaking collection of new data of large scale enforced disappearances by the security forces in Panjab. It is an outcome of painstaking data collection and diligent analysis of the recent history of Panjab. The book is the first written document of enforced disappearances in districts other than Amritsar in Panjab. It intends to bring the facts, as narrated by the families of the victims, to the world community in an effort to pressurize the government of India to initiate action against the guilty and to impress the International organizations to actively intervene and get justice for thousands of victims. The Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, during its 81st session, adopted a General Comment defining enforced disappearance as, “a detention, followed by an extrajudicial execution, … as long as such detention or deprivation of liberty was carried out by governmental agents of whatever branch or level, or by organized groups or private individuals acting on behalf of, or with the support, direct or indirect, consent or acquiescence of the government, and, subsequent to the detention, or even after the execution was carried out, state officials refuse to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the persons concerned or refuse to acknowledge the act having been perpetrated at all.” The Working Group was created by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 1980 to assist families in determining the fate and whereabouts of disappeared relatives. Join us for the book launch ceremony and our efforts to highlight the injustices.
